This Guillermo del Toro-Directed Horror Fantasy Is Now Streaming on Max

Guillermo del Toro is a special breed. Few creators have the vision and filmmaking chops to make a superhero picture appear artistic. But del Toro has managed to do exactly that on more than one occasion. His 2008 follow-up to Hellboy is one of the rare superhero features that delivers more than wonky CGI effects and grandiose set pieces. But you don’t have to take my word for it. Hellboy II: The Golden Army is now available to stream on Max.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army sees Ron Perlman reprising his role as the titular character. Also returning are Selma Blair as Liz Sherman and Doug Jones as Abe Sapien. Luke Goss, John Alexander, and James Dodd round out the picture’s cast. In addition to directing, del Toro also adapted the screenplay from the comic series by Mike Mignola.

If you’re unfamiliar with the setup, it goes like this:

Hellboy (Perlman), his pyrokinetic girlfriend, Liz (Blair), and aquatic empath, Abe Sapien (Jones), face their biggest battle when an underworld prince (Goss) plans to reclaim Earth for his magical kindred. Tired of living in the shadow of humans, Prince Nuada tries to awaken an ancient army of killing machines to clear the way for fantasy creatures to roam free. Only Hellboy can stop the dark prince and prevent humanity’s annihilation.

After the success of the first Hellboy film, del Toro and Mignola went back to the drawing board about the best way to continue the red giant’s cinematic adventures. At first, del Toro wanted to recreate the Wolfman, Frankenstein, and Dracula within the Hellboy universe. But when that didn’t work out, the duo decided it would be best to create a wholly original story based on folklore. Mignola told IGN, “The focus is more on the folklore and fairy tale aspect of Hellboy. It’s not Nazis, machines, and mad scientists but the old gods and characters who have been kind of shoved out of our world.”
