New Murder Mystery Dominates AppleTV+ Charts: “Prestige TV the way HBO used to do prestige TV”

AppleTV+ Presumed Innocent

I can’t remember who said it, but several months ago, someone online nicely conceptualized what I think I like best about Apple TV+—they’re not trying to do too much. In fairness, my subscription is free through my phone, but I think I’d subscribe on my own if that weren’t the case. Where other streamers (read: Netflix) inundate subscribers with new movies and shows on the daily, Apple TV+ is content to stagger their releases. Their library isn’t nearly as expansive as others, but it does mean their ratio of certified hits to certified flops is stronger than most. I mean, they are housing Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and The Changeling, after all. Unfortunately, their newest releases lack the buzz of most streamers, and that includes their recently released Presumed Innocent, which is currently the top-charting show on the streamer.

Per AppleTV+: A horrific murder upends the Chicago Prosecuting Attorney’s Office when one of its own is suspected of the crime—leaving the accused fighting to keep his family together.

Jake Gyllenhaal stars in the second adaptation of Scott Turow’s novel of the same name. The novel was first adapted in 1990 by director Alan J. Pakula with star Harrison Ford in the lead. Critics have conceded that the show doesn’t quite beat the feature adaptation yet, but the consensus remains it’s one of the summer’s best hidden gems.

The ensemble, including Gyllenhaal, Ruth Negga, and Bill Camp, deserve most of the credit. They’re quietly doing some of the best work on television right now, and it’s a shame so few people are actually seeing it. If you haven’t had a chance to check it out yet, I’m going to object and demand you do so immediately.

If I’m not enough to convince you, check out what fans have been saying about the AppleTV+ series online.
