M. Night Shyamalan Calls This Mind-Bending Christopher Nolan Thriller “Precise and challenging”

M. Night Shyamalan has had such a fascinating career. He’s been on top of the world, crashed and burned, and climbed his way back to the top. I have the utmost respect for his journey and for his tenacity. Lesser people would have given up in the face of adversity.

I also appreciate Shyamalan’s tendency to champion quality cinema. The Sixth Sense director knows a good movie when he sees one. Being a good chap, he sometimes takes to social media to share his thoughts. A while back, Shyamalan paid a repeat visit to Christopher Nolan’s Memento and shared his appreciation for the flick via Twitter.

The tweet reads: “Watched Memento last night. Haven’t seen it for so long. What an intricate and deftly made film. Precise and challenging. Classic Chris Nolan.”

For anyone unfamiliar, the setup goes as follows:

Leonard (Guy Pearce) is tracking down the man who sexually assaulted and murdered his wife. The difficulty, however, of locating his wife’s killer is compounded by the fact that he suffers from a rare, untreatable form of memory loss. Although he can recall details of life before his accident, Leonard cannot remember what happened fifteen minutes ago, where he’s going, or why.

It’s not surprising Shyamalan is a fan of Memento. That’s the picture that put Nolan on the map. It’s a supremely well-executed neo-noir thriller. Not to mention, it holds up to repeat visits in spite of hinging on a wild twist. And we know how much Shyamalan loves a twist.

Memento stars Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss, Joe Pantoliano, and Mark Boone Junior. In addition to directing, Nolan also penned the screenplay, adapted from his brother Jonathan’s short story, “Memento Mori”.
