Quentin Tarantino Doesn’t See The Appeal in This Popular Action Film: “It’s all tainted”

Quentin Tarantino loves sharing hot takes. The director seems to pride himself on espousing controversial cinematic opinions with zero remorse. Back in 2022, the Pulp Fiction director appeared on Bill Maher’s podcast. While discussing cinema, he shared his disdain for the critically acclaimed action film, Atomic Blonde.

“When I’m watching, like, the long fight in Atomic Blonde, I’m like, ‘God. This is amazing! This is f**king amazing! OK… wait a minute, no,’” Tarantino exclaimed. “‘The shot took a s**t. The shot’s not going on this long, it took a s**t.’ So it’s all tainted. It’s all tainted. Because obviously, they didn’t carry it through.”

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. But I wouldn’t take Tarantino’s word on this one. Atomic Blonde is a good movie with solid action sequences, great fight choreography, beautiful cinematography, and a killer performance by Oscar-winner Charlize Theron.

David Leitch directed Atomic Blonde from a script by Kurt Johnstad. The 2017 feature is adapted from the Antony Johnston novel The Coldest City.

If you’re unfamiliar with the setup, it goes like this:

Sensual and savage, Lorraine Broughton is the most elite spy in MI6, an agent who’s willing to use all of her lethal skills to stay alive during an impossible mission. With the Berlin Wall about to fall, she travels into the heart of the city to retrieve a priceless dossier and take down a ruthless espionage ring. Once there, she teams up with an embedded station chief to navigate her way through the deadliest game of spies.
