Stephen King Did Not Connect With This Adaptation of His Novel: “I just didn’t give a ****”

Stephen King has had countless books, short stories, and novellas adapted for the screen. With such prolific output, there are bound to be certain incarnations with which the writer doesn’t connect. The New York Times sat down with King a while back and discussed a few adaptations that didn’t land for him.

One such effort is Under the Dome. King liked the way the series started but grew disenchanted over time. “The first few episodes were great,” King began. “But the thing was, what CBS wanted was basically meatloaf—nothing too challenging, something to just fill some hours.” He went on to say, “It was a sad thing, but it didn’t bother me. I stopped watching after a while because I just didn’t give a [expletive].”

Stephen King has never been one to mince words. I appreciate his transparency and willingness to call it as he sees it. Cheers to you, Mr. King.

For anyone unfamiliar, the setup goes like this:

Based on the best-selling Stephen King novel of the same name, Under the Dome follows the residents of Chester’s Mill, Maine, as they find their small town suddenly cut off from the rest of the world by a transparent dome. While some people start to panic, a small group of citizens—led by Army veteran Dale Barbara—tries to maintain some semblance of peace and order, while also attempting to learn the truth about the mysterious barrier, the purpose behind it—and, most importantly, how to escape it.

The Under the Dome series stars Mike Vogel, Rachelle Lefevre, Alexander Koch, Colin Ford, and Mackenzie Lintz. The program was developed for CBS by Brian K. Vaughan. If you’re keen to check the series out, you can find it streaming on Paramount+.
