The Internet is Freaking Out Over This Terrifying New Video Game: “This one is gonna stick with me for a bit”

If you’re ever feeling burnt out by horror movies, desperately wishing you could just feel something again, there’s a super easy solution—play a scary video game. Seriously. Any horror fan can relate to the burgeoning sense of desensitization and the gnawing feeling that nothing is scary anymore. It goes away with time (and a revisit to Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum), but for those intermittent periods, horror video games can do a lot of the heavy lifting. Their narratives often rival their cinematic counterparts, and the gameplay experience can texturize the horror—and immerse you in it—in ways not comparable with just watching a movie. Luckily, one of the year’s best has just been released, and the internet cannot stop buzzing about it. I’m talking about Still Wakes the Deep.

Per Steam: 1975. Disaster strikes the Beira D oil rig off the coast of Scotland. Navigate the collapsing rig to save your crew from an otherworldly horror on the edge of all logic and reality.

Still Wakes the Deep was developed by The Chinese Room, a developer survival horror fans might know from titles like Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, an indirect sequel to Frictional Games’ classic Amnesia: The Dark Descent (also worth checking out if you’ve somehow missed it). Still Wakes the Deep was one of our most anticipated horror games of the year, and luckily, it didn’t disappoint. It’s scary. Seriously scary.

Still Wakes the Deep seamlessly blends Lovecraftian enemy design with the creep-and-stalk ethos of the Amnesia series and Alien: Isolation. Praise has been heaped on the character work, the immaculately detailed setting, and, of course, the sensational scares.

The internet can’t seem to get enough of it. Seriously, there are few joys as profound as getting a bunch of friends together for a survival horror game night and Still Wakes the Deep perfectly fits the bill.
