Beloved films from years past often find new life with a sequel imminent. And that’s precisely what’s happening with the 1996 disaster picture Twister. With the much-anticipated sequel Twisters debuting in theaters next week, Twister is climbing the streaming charts. In fact, the film is the #2 most-watched movie on Max today.

The original series installment earned nearly $500 million at the global box office. So, it’s no surprise a sequel is on the way. The real surprise is that it has taken this long to materialize.

In addition to cleaning up at the box office, Twister was a moderate success with critics. The disaster film currently sits at a critical approval rating of 63% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Twister features a dynamite cast that includes the likes of Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Cary Elwes, Jami Gertz, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Speed director Jan de Bont helmed the picture. The late Michael Crichton penned the screenplay with Anne-Marie Martin. Fun fact: Martin played Wendy in the 1980 slasher film Prom Night.

For anyone not familiar, the setup for this natural disaster film goes like this:

During the approach of the most powerful storm in decades, university professor Dr. Jo Harding (Hunt) and an underfunded team of students prepare the prototype for Dorothy, a ground-breaking tornado data-gathering device conceived by her estranged husband, Bill (Paxton). When Harding tells Bill that Dorothy is ready for testing — and that their privately funded rival Dr. Jonas Miller (Elwes) has stolen the idea and built his own — Bill rejoins the team for one last mission.
