David Fincher is one of the most noteworthy directors working today. He has such a knack for crafting tension and atmosphere. So, when he champions a film, we take note. I recently stumbled upon an interview Fincher did with the British Film Institute. During that exchange, the Zodiac director opened up about his take on Anna Biller’s The Love Witch.

“I saw The Love Witch recently which was one of the f**kin’ coolest and weirdest movies I’ve seen in a long time,” Fincher said. “That was definitely, that was an interesting experience.”

I concur that the flick is weird and cool in its own way. I love the fact that The Love Witch was shot on film and I really dig the way the colors are so saturated they could almost pop off the screen. The film has major retro European cinema vibes. So, fans of the genre output of Europe circa the 1970s should absolutely seek this one out.

In case you are unfamiliar with the setup, it goes like this:

Elaine (Samantha Robinson), a beautiful young witch, is determined to find a man to love her. In her Gothic Victorian apartment, she makes spells and potions, then picks up men and seduces them. However, her spells work too well, and she ends up with a string of hapless victims. When she at last meets the man of her dreams, her desperation to be loved drives her to the brink of insanity and murder.

If you’re curious to watch The Love Witch, you can find the film streaming on Tubi as of the publication of this post.
