Check Out This Terrifying ‘Shrek’ Short Horror Film

Fiona short film

Last week, DreamWorks Animation announced the July 2026 release of Shrek 5. Original cast members Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz are attached to return for… something? The last one I saw was Shrek the Third, and it upset my Shrek 2 loving heart so much, I’ve never been able to watch another. Broadly, as outlined in a pretty exceptional Teen Vogue editorial, ceaseless sequels are poised to fatigue longstanding franchise fans. Audiences need something new and different, not the same thing repackaged across generations until all beloved franchises look like that chocolate lady from Spongebob Squarepants. If you’re Shrek-fatigued like me, why not cleanse your palate with Andy Chen’s Fiona, a 2022 short horror film that has recently been rediscovered online?

Check out a preview below:

Per IMDB: Princess Fiona has to survive her years of imprisonment in the highest room of the tallest tower while dealing with her enchantment every night when the sun sets.

The short length keeps things snappy. Fiona adheres to the rhythms of other popular horror shorts: brief exposition, some great practical make-up, and a gory final scare before the credits roll. Fiona is brief yet exceptionally crafted.

The short film isn’t the first time director Andy Chen has gone viral, either. Just this year, you might have heard of The Spider starring The Walking Dead’s Chandler Riggs. There, Chen riffs on what an evil Spider-Man might look like. Check that out here:

Additionally, if you’re interested in Fiona, you can watch the entire 5-minute short below:

In a world of franchise fatigue and dead properties being resuscitated, I for one am never going to begrudge a burgeoning filmmaker the chance to take something sacred and make it as goopy and scary as possible. I mean, that Fiona makeup is pretty sick, right?

What do you think of Fiona? How would you feel about Shrek going the Twisted Childhood route (see: Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2)? Let me know over on Twitter @Chadiscollins.
