This Divisive M. Night Shyamalan Film is Now Free-to-Stream
M. Night Shyamalan has had his fair share of hits. But like most prolific creators, he has worked on a handful of releases that didn’t quite connect with critics or viewers. One of the director’s less-celebrated efforts recently landed on Amazon Freevee. I’m talking about the twisty 2021 horror thriller Old.
To be fair, this beach-set picture isn’t a total dud. Old was a financial success. The feature raked in more than $90 million at the global box office against an estimated budget of $18 million. Moreover, the flick has at least a handful of fans. The film currently holds a 50% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and sits at an audience score of 53%. With all of that taken into account, I wouldn’t call Old a total flop. But I wouldn’t label it a resounding success, either.

For anyone unfamiliar with the setup: Old is a thriller about a family on a tropical holiday who discover that the secluded beach where they are relaxing for a few hours is somehow causing them to age rapidly, reducing their entire lives into a single day.
Shyamalan’s Old stars Gael García Bernal, Vicky Krieps, Rufus Sewell, Alex Wolff, Thomasin McKenzie, and Abbey Lee. In addition to sitting at the helm, Shyamalan also adapted the screenplay from the graphic novel Sandcastle by Pierre Oscar Lévy and Frederik Peeters.
