Quentin Tarantino Nearly Cast This Iconic Actor As The Lead in ‘Kill Bill’

Kill Bill

Kill Bill is one of director Quentin Tarantino’s most beloved cinematic outings. The flick benefits from a strong screenplay, beautifully choreographed action sequences, and a dynamite cast. But the picture almost featured a different actor as the titular character. Before Tarantino decided to roll with David Carradine as Bill, he had his eye on two other performers.

Tarantino’s top choice to play Bill was Warren Beatty. The director spoke to BBC in 2003 about why Beatty dropped out of the project, saying: “…it was the whole combination—the time commitment, the fact that he had to do all this martial arts training… It was just a bigger deal than I had led Warren to believe. We decided this movie shouldn’t be our first marriage [laughs].”

The setup for Kill Bill goes as follows:

A former assassin, known simply as The Bride (Uma Thurman), wakes from a coma four years after her jealous ex-lover Bill (Carradine) attempts to murder her on her wedding day. Fueled by an insatiable desire for revenge, she vows to get even with every person who contributed to the loss of her unborn child, her entire wedding party, and four years of her life. After devising a hit list, The Bride sets off on her quest, enduring unspeakable injury and unscrupulous enemies.

In 2019, the director revealed to the Cinema Blend Podcast that Bruce Willis was also a contender for the role. Tarantino said the original incarnation of that character was more like an evil James Bond. He says the character: “…had a Warren Beatty kind of quality about him. And frankly, to tell you the truth, I probably wouldn’t had to have rewritten it that much if I had cast Bruce in it. “

The late David Carradine made the role his own. It’s almost impossible to imagine another actor taking a stab at bringing Bill to life. But it’s sure interesting to think what might have been if circumstances had been different.
