Denzel Washington has toplined a number of critically lauded motion pictures. He’s made great career moves over the years, and his choices have served him well. But there is at least one role the Oscar-winning actor regrets turning down.

A few years back, Jamie Foxx interviewed Washington in partnership with Grey Goose Vodka. When Foxx asked Washington about roles he shouldn’t have passed on, the actor revealed that he declined the chance to play Detective Mills in David Fincher’s Seven and regrets it.

Washington told Foxx: “I thought the script was too demonic, then I saw the movie, and I was like ‘oh, I blew it.’ But, you know, it worked out alright.”

It’s surprising to learn that the great Denzel Washington passed on such an iconic role. But to his point, it worked out alright. Brad Pitt makes a great Detective Mills. In addition to Pitt, the film stars Morgan Freeman and Gwyneth Paltrow. Fincher directed the picture from a screenplay by Andrew Kevin Walker. Walker would later go on to write the script for Fincher’s Netflix thriller The Killer.

If you’re reading Dread Central, you’ve probably seen Seven more than once. But just in case, the setup goes as follows:

When retiring police Detective William Somerset (Freeman) tackles a final case with the aid of newly transferred David Mills (Pitt), they discover a number of elaborate and grizzly murders. They soon realize they are dealing with a serial killer (Spacey) who is targeting people he thinks represent one of the seven deadly sins. Somerset also befriends Mills’ wife, Tracy (Paltrow), who is pregnant and afraid to raise her child in the crime-riddled city.
