This Monster Mashup Is Dominating the Max Charts

If you enjoy a bit of cheeky monster mayhem, we’ve got you covered, dear reader. The top-charting film on HBO’s Max platform is Adam Wingard’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

This film is probably best described as ‘popcorn entertainment.’ It wasn’t a big hit with critics. In fact, Godzilla x Kong sits at a critical approval rating of just 54% on Rotten Tomatoes. But the flick’s audience approval score is an impressive 91%. Sometimes watching giant monsters face off hits the spot. It may not be high art. But I defy anyone to tell me this type of setup isn’t at least entertaining.

We reviewed Godzilla x Kong when it bowed and scored the flick a 3.8/5. We summed it up nicely by saying: “Let’s be frank: The main draw of seeing a film like Godzilla x Kong is watching the titular titans fight. And they do so with frequency and ferocity. Whether on an ocean flotilla or in downtown Hong Kong, they go all out in a series of sequences that will have you cheering out loud.”

Terry Rossio, Simon Barrett, and Jeremy Slater penned the screenplay for this epic showdown. Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Dan Stevens, Kaylee Hottle, and Alex Ferns topline the picture.

For anyone not familiar with the proceedings, this crossover effort sees “Godzilla and the almighty Kong face a colossal threat hidden deep within the planet, challenging their very existence and the survival of the human race.
