Move Over, ‘Longlegs’—This is the Scariest Movie of 2024

Movie over, Longlegs, there’s a new scariest movie of 2024 in town. I’m being facetious, and Longlegs will forever have my heart, though genre fans are in for a real treat. After the record-shattering release of horror sensation Longlegs last weekend, Damian Mc Carthy’s Oddity has finally been unleashed upon the world. His Caveat (available to stream on Shudder) was one of 2020’s scariest movies, and if the word-of-mouth is anything to go by, Oddity is so much scarier.

In our review of Oddity out of this year’s SXSW Film Festival, we wrote, “Between McCarthy’s creeping story and Carolyn Bracken’s performances as twins sisters Darcy and Dani, Oddity is a bizarre nightmare of a film that while relying on familiar story beats, crafts a very scary movie that cuts you to the bone with every new twist and turn.” Now in a limited theatrical release before arriving on Shudder later this year, fans and critics can’t get enough of just how scary Oddity is.

Check out some choice reactions below:

Our own Mary Beth McAndrews hasn’t been able to stop talking about how great Oddity is. And she got to hang out with the film’s Wood Man, so you’ve got to trust her (or else).

Horror writer Paul Lê puts Oddity in the Top 5 for the year, and I’m inclined to agree.

When used correctly, I love a good jumpscare. Believe me, Oddity will have you flying out of your seat. Check out some other reactions below:

Horror fans have been eating really well this year, and Oddity is just the latest in a year where the genre has rarely, if ever, been this uncompromising. Be sure to check your local screenings (Oddity should absolutely be seen in a theater), though if nothing is available, keep an eye on Dread Central for news about its arrival on Shudder.
