The #1 Thriller On Netflix Is A “Crazy” Domestic Shocker
A polarizing thriller has been quickly building up popularity all over the world via Netflix these past few weeks, and now it’s finally cracked the top 10 stateside. That’s no small feat for a small international title. As of today, the most popular thriller on the most popular streaming platform is a stormy and pulpy little affair starring Annabelle Wallis, an actress who first drew the attention of the horror community when she appeared in the original Annabelle film. And, while that franchise starter itself was no critical darling, Wallis has since proven herself to be a genre powerhouse in James Wan’s polarising and unforgettable Malignant in 2021.
The popular new thriller in question is Vanished into the Night, an Italian film directed by Renato De Maria and written by Luca Infascelli alongside Francesca Marciano. While the title has been growing fast in popularity, even topping the Netflix global top ten charts for a moment, reviews have been somewhat poloraized from critics and fans a like. In the new Italian film, Elena is an American psychiatrist who came to live in Italy, in Puglia, for the love of Pietro, a man with a stormy past. They get married and have two children with the dream of restoring their Masseria farmhouse and turning it into a hotel. But things don’t exactly work out, and soon Pietro and Elena break up…
One night, their children vanish into thin air while they are with Pietro at the farm. He looks for them everywhere and in the end, in desperation, he is forced to admit the issue Elena, with whom he is in a dispute over custody of the kids. When Elena reaches him, she attacks him and blames him furiously. Until they receive a phone call: their children have been kidnapped, to get them back they will have to pay 150,000 euros in cash within 36 hours. But of course, all is not exactly as it may seem.

According to its audience, the Netflix thriller is as pulpy and campy as it is serious and intense. While that may not be everyone’s bag, it sure has me more interested in hitting play on the top-charting genre title on the world’s most-watched streaming platform.
