The #1 Thriller On HBO’s Max is a Steamy, Ultra-Violent and Shocking Love Affair
A dark crime thriller drawing comparisons to the Coen brothers sits as the 4th-most streamed film on HBO’s Max today. More specifically, I’m talking about the violent queer romance Love Lies Bleeding.
Our Chad Collins reviewed Love Lies Bleeding out of Sundance earlier this year and awarded the flick 4/5 stars. Collins called the picture “an electrifying odyssey of violent Americana and queer love.” He further described the feature as a lesbian, bodybuilding, crime fantasy, body horror, Lynchian saga. If that doesn’t pique your curiosity, I give up.
The film pulled in approximately $12.5 million at the global box office during its theatrical exhibition. Seeing as A24 tends to keep their budgets low, the picture’s box office take combined with a successful streaming debut likely means the feature will be considered a success for the boutique distributor.

Love Lies Bleeding stars Kristen Stewart, Katy O’Brian, Jena Malone, Anna Baryshnikov, Dave Franco, and Ed Harris.
Saint Maud director Rose Glass helmed the brutal tale of love and violence for A24. Glass co-wrote the screenplay with Weronika Tofilska (who previously directed several episodes of Baby Reindeer for Netflix).
In case you are unfamiliar with the setup for this dark crime thriller, it goes like this: Lou (Stewart) is a reclusive gym manager who falls hard for Jackie (O’Brian), an ambitious bodybuilder who’s heading to Las Vegas to pursue her dream. Their love soon leads to violence as they get pulled deep into the web of Lou’s criminal family.
