Before the magnificent Margot Robbie took over the world with Barbie, she was quietly undergoing a series of box office failures that had fans getting nervous. One of the biggest disappointments of note was Babylon, another Hollywood-set epic from Oscar-darling Damien Chazelle (La La Land). While Robbie faced other box office under-performers like Amsterdam, Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad, it was Chazelle’s juggernaut that had so many of us scratching our heads and wondering what could have gone wrong. Now Stephen King is once again voicing his support for the polarising spectacle, agreeing that the Robbie vehicle is a “terrific movie.”

Paramount Pictures says that Babylon is an “original epic set in 1920s Los Angeles led by Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie and Diego Calva, with an ensemble cast including Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li and Jean Smart” and describe it as “a tale of outsized ambition and outrageous excess [that] traces the rise and fall of multiple characters during an era of unbridled decadence and depravity in early Hollywood.”

Good news for fans and Paramount alike, Babylon is now finding its audience on Prime Video (at least for the time being). Love it or hate it, at least the 2022 movie is now able to reach a wider base. But be warned, this one isn’t exactly for the entire family. You can also take a quick peek at Stephen King’s thoughts on the movie below where we’ve collected both of his posts on the matter.

But is it scary?

Fans of the Paramount release can tell you all about the its strange horror-leaning elements. I won’t spoil the genre-tinged moments of the film with you here, but let’s just say Tobey Maguire’s short turn is creepy as hell. It definitely makes it worth a peek for genre fans.

If you enjoy the famously Oscar-snubbed 2022 release, you are not alone. Dread Central’s beloved newsletter editor-at-large Emily Gagne is a vocal supporter of the epic, as is the most important horror author of all time. Stephen King went far as calling Babylon “utterly brilliant,” “extravagant,” “over the top,” “hilarious,” and even “thought-provoking” in a Twitter/X post from 2023.
