Jordan Peele is a decorated filmmaker with a knack for telling compelling stories. His films are often laced with a level of social commentary. Despite being best known for thought-provoking output rife with subtext, the Get Out director has a soft spot for the campy, low-budget monster movies of the ‘80s. In fact, Peele once named Critters as his favorite B-movie.

In 2019, the Wall Street Journal asked Peele about his favorite B-movie. Though he doesn’t really sing the picture’s praises and his response reads as slightly self-conscious, the filmmaker nonetheless named Critters as his top pick.

“In retrospect, [it’s] fairly bad,” Peele told the WSJ. “But it gave me a wrong sort of feeling. Those little things were so mischievous and so…evil. They had those evil-ass faces.”

I concur that the Crites are delightfully devilish. The film’s antagonists are downright wicked-looking and manage to be imposing in spite of their rather small stature. Not to mention, the flick has a pretty great cast.

A few of the standout players are Dee Wallace, Billy Zane, Lin Shaye, and prolific character actor M. Emmet Walsh (who passed earlier this year).

If you’re keen to seek out Critters, you can find the film streaming on Tubi as of the publication of this post.

In case you are unfamiliar, the setup goes like this: When strange fuzzy creatures from outer space arrive on a farm, the Brown family — Jay (Billy Green Bush), Helen (Wallace), their daughter, April (Nadine Van Der Velde), and their son, Brad (Scott Grimes) — must fend off the malevolent little aliens. Two bounty hunters with superhuman abilities follow the aggressive beasts from beyond. But the warriors aren’t terribly effective, leaving the Brown family to battle the fur balls and rescue April from their clutches alone.
