Not only has the newly launched El Rey Network been pumping out promos left and right, they’ve also been hard at work on “From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series,” as evidenced by this first still which shows that the Geckos are indeed back.
Below you’ll see D.J. Cotrona and Zane Holtz as Seth and Richie Gecko, roles originated by George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino. Along with releasing the still, director Robert Rodriguez spoke to BuzzFeed about adapting the film for the small screen and developing a new vampire mythos.
“From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series” is shaping up to be a bit of a prequel to, as well as an expansion of, the movie. “We see things that led up to events in the film and much deeper character motivations and storylines to sort of launch into the new story that we’re doing,” Rodriguez said. “The film was a short story. This is the novel version.”
In addition “FDTD” will expand on Rodriguez’s interest in Mesoamerican mythology, something only hinted at in the film. “I did some research… [and] when I got into it, I realized, ‘Oh my God, I would love to do a whole other story on this culture and on this mythology. Let me throw some hints in From Dusk Till Dawn, and maybe in another film I’ll explore this.’ And I never got to.”
Which, of course, is a great fit for El Rey’s plans to tap into new facets of Latino culture along with offering innovative, fast-paced entertainment. “It is seeing something that you’ve never seen before, this Mesoamerican mythology of demon culture and these vampires that are not your traditional vampires,” Rodriguez said. “It’s a mix of this crime saga with these supernatural elements that will make this different from anything else on television.”
The 10-episode series is produced in association with FactoryMade Ventures and created and executive produced by network founder and filmmaker Robert Rodriguez. It centers around bank robber Seth Gecko (D.J. Cotrona) and his violent, unpredictable brother, Richard “Richie” Gecko (Zane Holtz), who are wanted by the FBI and Texas Rangers Earl McGraw (Don Johnson) and Freddie Gonzalez (Jesse Garcia) after a bank heist left several people dead. While on the run to Mexico, Seth and Richie encounter former minister Jacob Fuller (Robert Patrick) and his family, whom they take hostage. Using the family RV to cross the Border, chaos ensues when the group detours to a strip club that is populated by vampires. They are forced to fight until dawn in order to get out alive.
Co-stars include Wilmer Valderrama as enigmatic crime lord Carlos; Madison Davenport as Kate Fuller; Brandon Soo Hoo as Scott Fuller; Adrianne Palicki as Vanessa Styles; Jake Busey as Professor Aiden Tanner; Lane Garrison as Pete; and Eiza González as Santánico Pandemonium.
Look for “From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series” to premiere sometime in the first quarter of 2014. For more info in the meantime, keep your eyes on the show’s Facebook page, the official El Rey Network website, El Rey Network on Facebook, and El Rey Network on Twitter.
