Stephen King Promises the Less You Know Going into This “Clever” Thriller, the Better

Stephen King

Stephen King consumes a lot of media, and he isn’t shy about sharing his thoughts on what he’s been watching. Recently, the bestselling author took to Twitter to endorse a buzzy horror thriller that generated a great deal of acclaim during its Fantastic Fest premiere last year. I’m talking about Strange Darling.

King’s tweet reads: “I wish I could say more about Strange Darling, but it’s one of those films that’s too clever to spoil, so best to say nothing.”

That’s a rather cryptic message. But knowing that King finds the film clever and that he considers the narrative engaging enough to avoid spoilers altogether has me intrigued.

King isn’t the only one singing the film’s praises, however. Strange Darling has been a resounding success with critics thus far. The picture sits at a critical approval rating of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes (with 17 reviews tallied) as of the publication of this post.

The film stars Willa Fitzgerald, Kyle Gallner, Barbara Hershey, Ed Begley Jr., and Steven Michael Quezada. JT Mollner wrote and directed the film. Strange Darling is Mollner’s sophomore feature. His debut, Outlaws and Angels, played Sundance in 2016.

The setup for Strange Darling goes like this: Things spin out of control when a one-night stand spirals into a serial killer’s vicious murder spree.

If King’s recommendation has you keen to check the flick out, you can do so soon enough. You can scope Strange Darling in theaters beginning August 23, 2024.
