Where to Stream the Shocking New Chiller Mike Flanagan Praises As “Modern and original”
One of the year’s best horror movies is now streaming on Shudder. Jang Jae-hyun’s South Korean shocker Exhuma is not only one of South Korea’s highest-grossing films of all time (yes, all time), but it’s arguably one of the greatest South Korean horror films of the century. It’s such an unhinged, scary, gory, unpredictable movie, and I can’t recommend it enough.
If my word isn’t enough for you, how about Mike Flanagan’s? In a recent Letterboxd review of the film, he had nothing but positive things to say.
Unearth the trailer for Exhuma
Per Shudder: After tracing a strange ailment to a remote gravesite, a team of supernatural experts soon discovers what happens when you mess with the wrong grave.
In my review of the film from earlier this year, I awarded Exhuma 4.5 out of 5 stars, writing, “Exhuma is thrilling, bold, and ceaselessly surprising in its excess. A strong central cast unearths comedy, tragedy, and carnage in equal measure. Its more commercial and genre elements might hamstring the broader implications of its scares, but Exhuma is the most fun you’ll have playing with dead things all summer.” It will undoubtedly rank as one of my favorite horror movies of the year, and odds are, Mike Flanagan will rank it the same.
Mike Flanagan’s stamp of approval
In Mike Flanagan’s Letterboxd review of the film, he wrote, “I really dug this (see what I did there).” He expanded his thoughts, writing:
“Oldboy’s Choi Min-Sik leads the cast in this ambitious Korean horror film about exhuming the wrong grave, and the ghastly consequences. What seems like a straight forward twist on an exorcism/possession movie has more up its sleeve, though, and was much larger in scope than I anticipated. Smart writing, good performances, and some terrific effects elevate this ghost story into something far more modern and original than I expected. Recommended.”
Post mortem
I agree with everything Flanagan had to say. If you’re interested in reading more of Mike Flanagan’s film reviews, be certain to follow him on Letterboxd. While you’re there, you can follow me, but I promise it won’t be nearly as rewarding.
