It might be challenging to remember now, but when Rose Glass’ Saint Maud first premiered in 2019, it was scheduled for an April 2020 release. On account of the COVID-19 pandemic, Saint Maud was indefinitely delayed, finally arriving stateside in early 2021. For casual audiences especially, the film was easily missed. While the trailer might have attracted interest, the shifting release dates made it difficult to track down when the buzz was hottest.

It’s a shame since Saint Maud is one of the decade’s finest horror movies. If you think so, too, you’re in good company—famed (and Oscar-winning) filmmaker Guillermo del Toro agrees:

Per Prime Video: Hospice nurse Maud, a newly devout Roman Catholic, becomes dangerously obsessed with saving the soul of a former dancer in her care — but sinister forces, and her own sinful past, threaten to put an end to her holy calling.

Saint Maud is presently available to stream for free on MGM+ and Prime Video. Last week, Guillermo del Toro retweeted a post from a user, BriAnimator, praising the film. The tweet, in part, read, “Saint Maud is one of the best modern day religious horror movies.” Check out the full tweet below:

We over here at Dread Central tend to agree with both Bri and Guillermo del Toro. Guest contributor Chrishaun Baker even penned a remarkable editorial on the film. Additionally, with Love Lies Bleeding, director Rose Glass is two-for-two. Not only is Love Lies Bleeding charting on Max, it’s also one of the year’s strongest genre releases. You can check out my review here.

What do you think? Do you have any plans to check out Saint Maud? If you’ve already seen it, what did you think? Let me know over on Twitter @Chadiscollins. I’m a huge Rose Glass (and Guillermo del Toro) stan, so definitely stop by to chat.
