The Horror Remake Rob Zombie Calls “The Most Pointless Film Ever Made” Is Now Streaming

Rob Zombie is nothing if not opinionated. And he has no qualms about sharing his spicy notions publicly. Today, we have a hot take from the rocker-turned-filmmaker with which I can’t help but agree.

Reservations

During an interview with Revolver, Zombie named what he considers to be the five worst horror films of all time. On that list is Gus Van Sant’s Psycho. I think Van Sant is a talented director. But remakes work best when there’s a different perspective from which to tell the story or something about the original that can be improved upon. However, Van Sant merely recreated the Hitchcock classic in color, with new actors. The update went over like a lead balloon. The moviegoing public (and Rob Zombie) had no time for it.

“I picked this not because it’s the worst film ever made, but because it’s the most pointless film ever made,” Zombie began. “To take a perfect movie made by a genius, and remake it — that’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard in my life.”

Zombie hits the nail on the head by calling the redux pointless. Films like Gus Van Sant’s Psycho (and John Moore’s The Omen) bring almost nothing new to the table, making it challenging to justify their very existence.

Late check in

You probably don’t need a refresher on Psycho. But I will leave this here, just in case: Hoping for a fresh start with her broke boyfriend, Marion (Anne Heche) steals a huge sum from her boss and skips town, eventually stopping at a remote motel. There, she’s served by the intensely awkward yet docile Norman Bates (Vince Vaughn), whom she often hears arguing with his domineering mother. But later that night, Marion is brutally slain, and Norman finds and hides the body. When a detective and Marion’s sister visit the motel to investigate, they uncover shocking truths.

Checking out

This strange, arthouse and possibly misguided shot-by-shot remake of Psycho is at last streaming for your easy viewing. The title is on Apple TV+ and Stars, or you can throw a few bucks at it for a digital rental.

That’s all we’ve got for you, for the time being. Keep your eyes peeled for more spicy takes from genre filmmakers as we uncover them. Also, make sure to follow @DreadCentral on Twitter so you never miss out on one of our cool updates.
