Stephen King is one of the most prolific authors of our time. He has written countless books, short stories, novellas, and more. As such, it seems there are always multiple adaptations of his work in development at any given time. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that one of the many adaptations of King’s output hits both Prime Video and Tubi today. The title in question is Big Driver.

The flick is adapted from King’s novella of the same name. The picture is a harrowing tale of sexual assault and the retribution that follows. The film debuted on the Lifetime network in 2014 and was released on physical media the following year.

Ride or Die

This twisted horror thriller has proved fairly divisive with critics. Some film scholars see merit in the picture’s second half, taking the revenge sequence as empowering and cathartic. Others wrote the film off as cheaply made and exploitative. As of the publication of this post, Big Driver sits at a 50% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. If you are curious to see where you stand on this adaptation, head over to Prime Video or Tubi and give it a watch.

The Short Cut

The film stars Maria Bello, Ann Dowd, Will Harris, Joan Jett, and Olympia Dukakis. Richard Christian Matheson adapted King’s novella for the small screen and Mikael Salomon helmed.

Knowing that Joan Jett appears in a supporting role is enough to sell me on this one. I’ll probably put Big Driver on when I finish work for the day.

The setup for Big Driver goes like this: While driving on a lonely stretch of road, a woman’s tire blows out. Relieved when another driver offers to help, she quickly finds her savior is her assailant.
