Showtime is starting to dole out the goods for its upcoming “Penny Dreadful,” and following up on this morning’s new teaser and production blog, we now have another still, again featuring stars Josh Hartnett and Eva Green.
The image comes from EW, who also chatted with series creator John Logan, who says he drew inspiration from 1940s monster mash-up movies.
Logan told the site, “I thought there was incredible excitement to slamming all those myths together… It’s highly erotic, very bloody. It’s about building a family… Admittedly, the creepiest family you can imagine.”
The horror crowd should appreciate the rest of Logan’s comments. “When I was first talking to [executive producer] Sam Mendes about it, the word I came up with was ‘disturbing’,” says Logan. “It’s not enough to scare people because that’s a cheaper sensation. But to unsettle and disturb people on a deeper level because they feel familiarity with monstrous characters is really our goal.”
“Penny Dreadful” is created, written, and executive produced by three-time Oscar nominee John Logan (Hugo, The Aviator, Gladiator) and executive produced by Oscar winner Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Skyfall) and Neal Street’s Pippa Harris (Revolutionary Road, “Call the Midwife”).
Timothy Dalton, Reeve Carney, Josh Hartnett, Harry Treadaway, Rory Kinnear, Billie Piper, and Eva Green star; and Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage, The Impossible) directs the first two episodes.
“Penny Dreadful” is set to premiere on Showtime in spring 2014. For more info in the meantime, visit “Penny Dreadful” on Showtime, “like” “Penny Dreadful” on Facebook, and follow @SHO_Penny on Twitter.
Synopsis
Some of literature’s most terrifying characters, including Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, and iconic figures from the novel Dracula, are lurking in the darkest corners of Victorian London. “PENNY DREADFUL” is a frightening psychological thriller that weaves together these classic horror origin stories into a new adult drama.
