One of the Top-Rated Horror Films of All Time Is Now Streaming on Max
When I’m scouring the streaming platforms for something to watch, I always check the Tomatometer score to see what I’m getting myself into. The fine folks at Rotten Tomatoes make it easy to vet a film before making a two-hour time commitment. Though I don’t always agree with the critical consensus, it’s a valuable tool that makes it easy to make an informed decision.
In their effort to streamline the cinematic experience, the team at Rotten Tomatoes has compiled a list of the top 200 horror films of all time, ranked by Tomatometer score. And it just so happens that the feature that claims the #14 slot on that list is now available to stream on Max. I’m talking about the celebrated French chiller Diabolique.
The setup goes as follows:
The cruel and abusive headmaster of a boarding school, Michel Delassalle (Paul Meurisse), becomes the target of a murder plot hatched by an unlikely duo — his meek wife (Vera Clouzot) and the mistress he brazenly flaunts (Simone Signoret). The women, brought together by their mutual hatred for the man, pull off the crime but become increasingly unhinged by a series of odd occurrences after Delassalle’s corpse mysteriously disappears.
This standout effort is ‘certified fresh’ at 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics and movie lovers alike are taken with it. The audience approval rating is an equally impressive 93%.
This twist-filled effort is directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot. The film is adapted from the novel by Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac. Clouzot co-wrote the screenplay with Jérôme Géronimi, René Masson, and Frédéric Grendel.
