‘The Substance’ Trailer: Coralie Fargeat’s Body Horror Film Wants To Get Under Your Skin

Writer and director Coralie Fargeat captured my heart with the release of her 2018 film Revenge, which was a stylized, hyper-violent subversion of the rape-revenge film soaked in neon pink that’s been bleached by the scorching sun. Now Fargeat is back with her new chaotic vision of terror, this time tackling body horror and aging movie stars in The Substance.

The synopsis simply reads:

Have you ever dreamt of a better version of yourself?

You. Only better in every way.

Seriously.

You should try this new product: The Substance. IT CHANGED MY LIFE.

Watch the official trailer and see what The Substance can do for you:

The trailer already shows off the same stylized cinematography seen in Revenge, but this time Fargeat is working with cinematographer Benjamin Kracun. The Substance will be dripping in style, and most likely blood, as Fargeat offers her own examination of Los Angeles stardom and what it means to try and stay young forever.

Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley star in the film, with each playing a different side of the same character. Dennis Quaid also stars as a smarmy agent type who loves to consume (at least according to the trailer’s nasty close-up of Quaid devouring some shrimp).

The Substance comes exclusively to theaters on September 20, 2024.
