Enter The Strange and Terrifying World of ‘Azrael’ [Watch]

Religious horror often has the same narrative arc: a young girl is possessed by an entity and someone has to save her. Of course, there are examples that exist outside of such an arc, but it’s the expected chain of events when religion is mixed into the horror stew. But director E.L. Katz and writer Simon Barrett wanted to try something different when it came to religious horror. Their new film Azrael takes place in a world where humanity has experienced the Rapture and now there are very real horrors to avoid in the deep dark woods… Oh, and did I mention there’s barely any dialogue?

Read the full synopsis:

In a world in which no one speaks, a mysterious, devout community hunts down a young woman named Azrael (Samara Weaving) who has escaped their imprisonment. Recaptured by its ruthless leaders, she is to be sacrificed to pacify an evil that resides deep within the surrounding wilderness. But Azrael will stop at nothing to ensure her own freedom and survival.

Just from the trailer, you can tell this is going to be another genre banger where Samara Weaving gets absolutely drenched in blood and put through the physical, mental, and emotional wringer. It’s not a horror movie starring Weaving unless she’s borderline unrecognizable by the time the credits roll.

Katz himself is no stranger to the horror genre. After getting his start as a horror journalist, he directed his first feature, Cheap Thrills, in 2013. Since then, he’s directed episodes of The Haunting Of Bly Manor, Swamp Thing, and Channel Zero. And Barrett is of course a genre darling, working closely with director Adam Wingard on films such as The Guest, You’re Next, and V/H/S.

Weaving stars in Azrael with Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Vic Carmen Sonne, Katariina Unt, and Sebastian Bull.

Azrael comes exclusively to theaters on September 27, 2024.
