Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia’s The Platform is one of Netflix’s greatest successes. Released in November of 2019, The Platform was an immediate hit. An incredulous one, too. That’s not to say The Platform is bad—it’s not by any means—just that it’s a pretty sick film. It’s very much of the so-disgusting-I-need-to-look-away variety.

That it resonated with general audiences everywhere is pretty astounding. In fact, it resonated so much, that it is currently the fifth most-streamed title not in English on the service with an estimated 82,800,000 total views.

Per Netflix: A slab of food descends down a vertical facility. The residents above eat heartily, leaving those below starving and desperate. A rebellion is imminent.

The Platform is grim stuff by Netflix standards. Where Parasite, released the same year, used black comedy to ground its socio-political subtext, The Platform is all text. Chewy, meaty, fatty text. The facility residents rely on the titular platform to eat. There are penalties doled out to any residents who endeavor to save or keep any food. Food diminishes as the platform lowers, and residents are randomly shuffled around. Level 2 might not be so bad? Level 132? Like the film’s characters, you might just end up cannibalizing your cellmate.

Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia is returning to the world of The Platform with The Platform 2, set to premiere on Netflix October 2. Milena Smit, Hovik Keuchkerian, Natalia Tena, and Óscar Jaenada are set to star. Per the Netflix description, “After a mysterious leader imposes his law in a brutal system of vertical cells, a new arrival battles against a dubious food distribution method.” Check out the trailer below:

The Platform was not only a commercial success for Netflix, but a critical one as well. The Rotten Tomatoes Critics Score is at a solid 81%. Whether there’s anything left in the conceit to be served remains to be seen, though we’ll know soon enough when the film bows on Netflix in early October. In the meantime, why not revisit the first? Just be certain to bring your own barf bag.

What do you think? Are you a fan of The Platform? Is it a fresh meal or chock full of stale horror tropes? Additionally, are you surprised to hear it’s one of Netflix’s most-watched films ever? Any chance the sequel will reach that level of success? Let me know what you think over on Twitter @Chadiscollins.
