‘Cuckoo’ Producer Will Launch Horror Label Cweature Features With “New partnership” [Exclusive]

We have exciting news on deck for you, dear reader. Waypoint Entertainment, the production company behind the critically acclaimed horror chiller Cuckoo (review), recently announced a new genre label that will spin off of Waypoint as its own full-service production house. Described as an “evil sister company,” The new venture is called Cweature Features (pronounced: Kwee-Cha Fee-Chas).

Waypoint’s Ken Kao and Josh Rosenbaum will head up the new venture. The pair will work alongside a team that includes Emily Cheung and Dani Klemes. This announcement comes on the heels of Waypoint penned a slate deal with Neon that will see the production house work on genre pictures with a budget of $10 million.

Ken Kao, the cofounder and president of Waypoint and Cweature Features shared this exclusive statement with Dread Central:

“As film producers and fans of the horror genre, we’ve always been captured by the primal power of fear—how it challenges us, grips us, and, ultimately, transforms us. Our goal is to give filmmakers the support and freedom to push the boundaries of what the horror genre can be. Horror film fans are some of the most astute and loyal filmgoing audiences, and we take it seriously to make sure we are creating films that are worthy of their attention. This is a new chapter for us, and I can’t wait to see what nightmares we unleash. A new partnership is going to be announced soon.”

How nice to see creators passionate about horror space given the chance to curate for the genre set. It’s evident from Kao’s statement that he respects the horror community and wants to do right by us.

In case you need further assurance, the first film in Waypoint’s slate deal with Neon is Longlegs. Talk about starting out with a bang. The picture is currently the top-grossing indie horror feature of the past 10 years. The ongoing collaboration between the Cuckoo producers and Neon will lead to more exciting output in the future.

Fun fact: The charming name of the new production house is inspired by Kao’s 6-year-old daughter and her friends, who have historically struggled to pronounce the word ‘creature’.
