One of the Best Horror Films of All Time, According to Rotten Tomatoes, Is Now Free to Stream

Tomatoes

The fine folks at Rotten Tomatoes have streamlined film criticism. Instead of having to hunt down a sampling of reviews, they make it easy on movie lovers. A critical consensus is typically more reliable than a single critique when assessing a film’s collective strengths. I’ve become so reliant on Rotten Tomatoes approval ratings that it’s hard to remember life before the Tomatometer.

Speaking of the Tomatometer, the second-highest-rated horror film of all time (according to the Rotten Tomatoes algorithm) is now available to stream for free. I’m speaking of the atmospheric coming-of-age tale of vampirism Let the Right One In. This celebrated Swedish film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by John Ajvide Lindqvist.

The setup goes as follows:

When Oskar (Kåre Hedebrant), a sensitive, bullied 12-year-old boy living with his mother in suburban Sweden, meets his new neighbor, the mysterious and moody Eli (Lina Leandersson), they strike up a friendship. Initially reserved with each other, Oskar and Eli slowly form a close bond, but it soon becomes apparent that she is no ordinary young girl. Eventually, Eli shares her dark, macabre secret with Oskar, revealing her connection to a string of bloody local murders.

Lindqvist adapted his tome for the screen with Tomas Alfredson at the helm of the production. Several years after making a splash with Let the Right One In, Alfredson went on to direct the celebrated Cold War spy thriller Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

Let the Right One In holds the impressive distinction of being ‘certified fresh’ on Rotten Tomatoes with an awe-inspiring critical rating of 98% The film claims the number 2 spot on Rotten Tomatoes’ list of the 200 best horror films of all time. The film sits just behind Alien, which the platform hails as the best horror film of all time.

Let the Right One In was released in 2008. An English-language remake followed in 2010. The reimagining is called Let Me In. And while it is worth seeking out, nothing can top the real McCoy. If you’re keen to pay a repeat visit to Let the Right One In, you can find the flick streaming on Tubi as of the publication of this post.
