The #1 Horror Movie On Prime Video Was Savaged by Critics; Stephen King “Loved” It

Stephen King has killer taste in cinema. Over the years, the author has turned his readers onto plenty of noteworthy films and series. But like anyone else, the Misery scribe occasionally demonstrates a soft spot for less artistic fare. I can relate. I see the merit in plenty of films that don’t get everything right. King recently threw caution to the wind and shared his appreciation for a film that few others did. That film is Night Swim.

Where critics saw flaws, King saw promise. He posted the following enthusiastic endorsement to Twitter (X): “I loved The Night Swim (Amazon Prime). It’s like a lost, low-budget Steven Spielberg film from Spielberg’s early period…say, after Duel but before Jaws. Simple story, but…the cat on the diving board! And those creepy bunny slippers!”

While King was taken by the bunny slippers and the diving board kitty, most critics saw a mess of a movie. The flick sits at a less-than-stellar Rotten Tomatoes critical approval rating of just 20%, with an audience score of 43%.

Night Swim is a feature-length adaptation of the 2014 short film of the same name by Rod Blackhurst and Bryce McGuire. The pair re-teamed ten years on from the release of the short to bring their 3-minute tale of terror to the big screen.

Several critics and moviegoers pointed out that the film’s core premise has a certain level of promise but the concept isn’t strong enough to sustain a feature. But maybe you will side with Stephen King on this one and see something that most missed. If you’re keen to check out this tale of aquatic terror, head over to Prime Video now. The picture has been making waves (sorry) on the streamer since it debuted.

This divisive horror picture plays out like this: Forced into early retirement by a degenerative illness, former baseball player Ray Waller moves into a new house with his wife and two children. He hopes that the backyard swimming pool will be fun for the kids and provide physical therapy for himself. However, a dark secret from the home’s past soon unleashes a malevolent force that drags the family into the depths of inescapable terror.
