Critically-Panned Denzel Washington Sci-Fi Thriller That Audiences Enjoy is Now on Prime Video

Denzel Washington is one of the most universally appealing movie stars of our time. He has impressive range as a thespian, he’s a handsome devil, and the beloved actor has made really smart choices over the course of his illustrious career.

Even as choosey as Washington has been with the roles he takes on, the actor has still appeared in a few films that didn’t quite connect with the masses. One example of exactly that is the sci-fi thriller Virtuosity. It’s a bummer that this one wasn’t more universally beloved, seeing as Washington hasn’t done a ton of genre work. But die-hard fans of the Oscar-winning actor may still find some merit in this maligned offering. After all, the film has at least a few influential supporters. In fact, Roger Ebert awarded the picture 3/4 stars in his review and said the film “finds surprises in the
paradox of a villain that is also a program.”

I suspect this flick might appeal to fans of futuristic ‘90s sci-fi fare like Johnny Mnemonic. If you’re curious to see if you connect with the film, you can find it streaming on Prime Video now.

In addition to Washington, the picture’s talented cast includes the likes of Russell Crowe, Kelly Lynch, Stephen Spinella, and William Forsythe. Brett Leonard (Hideaway) was at the helm of the picture and Eric Bernt penned the screenplay (The Hitcher 2007).

If you need a primer on the setup, the plot crunch for Virtuosity goes like this: A former cop who has been imprisoned for murdering the psychopath who killed his family, Parker Barnes (Washington) is recruited to test out a new virtual-reality program where the goal is to apprehend a computer-generated being called SID 6.7 (Crowe), who has been modeled on hundreds of deranged criminals. When SID manages to escape into the real world, Barnes must capture or destroy him before the soulless entity can go on a killing spree.
