Stephen King Demands This Horror Show Be Renewed: “VERY scary”

Stephen King 'Evil'

The streaming era is unpredictable. What qualifies as a success or a failure is anyone’s guess, though broadly, I think it’s fair to concede shows are being held to higher and higher standards. What would have been an unqualified success a decade ago is too often framed in the present day as a flop, and as a result, promising shows are axed just as they’re starting to shine. Such was the case with Robert and Michelle King’s Evil. The series, which first premiered in 2019 on CBS, subsequently moved to Paramount+ for three additional seasons. Like Netflix’s Dead Boy Detectives, the genre hit was unceremoniously canceled this year. Fans everywhere are upset, and genre maestro Stephen King probably is too. He is, after all, a big fan of the show.

Per Netflix: A skeptical psychologist enters the world of angels and demons when she partners with a priest-in-training to find the line between science and religion.

Evil stars Katja Herbers, Mike Colter, and Aasif Mandvi. The trio is tasked by the church to investigate supernatural incidents. Since Evil’s inception, fans have been all but hollering from the horror rooftops, begging audiences to give it a shot. The series is scary, gross, funny, tender—everything a great horror show should be. It also has some of the best effects you’ll see this side of Tom Savini.

Stephen King himself is a huge fan of the show, too. Recently, he tweeted that Evil was “smart, thought-provoking, occasionally VERY scary.”

Stephen King isn’t the only fan of Evil. The show has been a remarkable success online. Though, as noted in the introduction, in today’s age, cult interest still isn’t enough to save a show bound to unrealistic (and often unclear) performance metrics. Check out what audiences have been saying about the show below, including King’s call to save the show. Maybe King is the push we need for another season.

Evil’s first two seasons are available to stream on Netflix, and you can catch the final two seasons on Paramount+. If you haven’t checked the show out before, consider this your sign (from beyond) to give it a shot.

What do you think? Are you a fan of Evil? Are you as bummed about its cancellation as Stephen King? Let me know over on Twitter @Chadiscollins where I’m always down to commiserate.
