This Gritty Denzel Washington Crime Thriller is Now Streaming on Paramount+

Denzel Washington

Denzel Washington is one of the most universally appealing actors working in Hollywood today. He comes across as a total class act. He’s endlessly talented and has a dynamic range few of his contemporaries can match. It’s no wonder he continues to be a box office draw decades into his illustrious career.

Washington isn’t just a box office draw, however. Denzel’s films also pop off on streaming with a certain regularity. Speaking of the actor’s streaming prowess, one of his most noteworthy cinematic outings has been added to Paramount+. That’s right, I’m talking about Training Day.

The setup for Training Day goes like this:

A police drama about a veteran officer who escorts a rookie on his first day with the LAPD’s tough inner-city narcotics unit. Training Day is a blistering action drama that asks the audience to decide what is necessary, what is heroic, and what crosses the line in the harrowing gray zone of fighting urban crime. Does law-abiding law enforcement come at the expense of justice and public safety? If so, do we demand safe streets at any cost?

The film features a gifted cast all around. Washington stars alongside Ethan Hawke, Scott Glenn, Eva Mendes, and Cliff Curtis. The key players are joined by a veritable who’s who of recording artists, as well, with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and Macy Gray appearing in supporting roles.

The film’s success led to a CBS television series based on the property. However, the show didn’t have the same staying power as the award-winning film and lasted only one season before the network pulled the plug.

Washington won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his engaging performance in Training Day. Hawke also scored a Best Supporting Actor nod for his turn as Washington’s protege.

Director Antoine Fuqua achieved the film’s gritty aesthetic by shooting many scenes on location in various Los Angeles area neighborhoods. He helms from a script penned by David Ayer.

This collaboration between Washington and Fuqua would eventually pave the way for the duo to work together on the box office-dominating Equalizer film series. Fuqua has helmed all three franchise installments to date with Washington toplining each film in the cannon.
