The #1 Thriller on Hulu is a Hot and Heavy Murder Mystery and a True Hidden Gem

Hulu subscribers are rediscovering a forgotten horror thriller from 2008 that follows enterprising medical residents competing to commit the perfect murder. The film is called Pathology.

The picture is currently the 9th most-watched movie on Hulu and the #1 horror film on the platform. Not too shabby.

What makes me curious to check this one out is the screenwriting pedigree. Crank and Crank 2: High Voltage co-directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor (formerly known as Neveldine/Taylor) penned the script for this macabre tale of deceit and murder. I’m a fan of their collective output and hold out hope the pair will rejoin forces someday.

Though Neveldine/Taylor collaborated on the screenplay and often worked as a directorial collective during their heyday, they were not at the helm of Pathology. Marc Schölermann assumed directorial duties on this project.

You can scope the trailer via the player below. I haven’t sat down to watch the film yet, but from the preview, this flick looks a bit like Flatliners without the supernatural aspect. It might just be worth a watch. I know I’m sold.

While I am enthusiastic about this film’s potential, the critical reaction was mixed. The flick sits at a ‘fresh’ rating of just 46% on Rotten Tomatoes. The Metacritic score is slightly better at 55/100. But I’m not deterred in the slightest. Mark Olsen from the LA Times caught my attention with this blurb: “Gleefully brimming with body parts and bad behavior, Pathology is a fun piece of flamboyant tastelessness”.

I don’t know about you, but I love flamboyant tastelessness in almost all of its forms, especially when it’s served up by creatives whose work I enjoy and features a competent cast of characters.

Speaking of the cast, Pathology stars Milo Ventimiglia, Alyssa Milano, Keir O’Donnell, Michael Weston, and Lauren Lee Smith.

In case you need more info, the setup goes accordingly: Medical student Ted Grey (Milo Ventimiglia) graduates at the top of his class and quickly joins an elite pathology program, whose top students invite him into their circle. There he uncovers a gruesome secret: They play a game in which one tries to commit the perfect, undetectable murder, and then the others compete to determine the victim’s cause of death.

That’s all we have for you at present, dear reader. Be sure to stay tuned to the site for forthcoming updates on which films are charting on your favorite streaming platforms.
