Guillermo del Toro’s Most Heartbreaking Film Is Now Free to Stream
Guillermo del Toro is a visionary creator with the Midas touch. He has no shortage of brilliant ideas and knows how to bring his creations to life in breathtaking fashion. His films are almost always visually striking and many of them have a poignant emotional core that hits you right in the feels.
For my money, del Toro’s most heartbreaking film is Pan’s Labyrinth. Well, also Pinocchio, and The Devil’s Backbone, and… OK, I guess it’s not easy to definitively name just one of the filmmaker’s cinematic efforts as his most devastating. But Pan’s Labyrinth surely tops my personal ranking of the auteur director’s most heartbreaking pictures.
Pan’s Labyrinth works on so many levels. The proceedings are compelling on the surface, but the subtext is also astute and thought-provoking. The film deftly chronicles a child dealing with very adult feelings like loss, fear, devastation, and loneliness by leaning into an imaginary world of magic and wonder. Del Toro brings that juxtaposition to life with an endless supply of imagination and groundbreaking visuals. Even the fantasy elements are tinged with sadness. However, the reality of what the primary character, Ofelia (Ivana Baquero), endures that sends her to that imaginary safe place is almost too much to bear. With that said, the tragic subject matter ensures the film will stick with you for the foreseeable future.
Guillermo del Toro wowed audiences and critics alike with Pan’s Labyrinth
The film garnered rave reviews from critics and even won three Academy Awards. Pan’s Labyrinth claimed the Oscar statuettes for Best Achievement in Cinematography, Best Achievement in Art Direction, and Best Achievement in Makeup. Not a bad showing.
If you’re keen to surrender to total emotional devastation, I have good news for you. Pan’s Labyrinth is now available to stream for free (with ads) via Tubi. Just make sure you grab a box of Kleenex. You’ll need it.
The setup for this film goes like this:
It’s 1944 and the Allies have invaded Nazi-held Europe. In Spain, a troop of soldiers is sent to a remote forest to flush out the rebels. They are led by Capitan Vidal, a murdering sadist, and with him are his new wife Carmen, and her daughter from a previous marriage, 11-year-old Ofelia. Ofelia witnesses her stepfather’s sadistic brutality and is drawn into Pan’s Labyrinth, a magical world of mythical beings.
