This Totally Outrageous Stephen King Original Horror Movie is Finally Free to Stream

Stephen King

We do our best to keep our readers in the loop any time a Stephen King adaptation becomes available to stream. They can’t all be winners. But even the most divisive renderings of the author’s work have a fanbase. One great example is the 1992 feature Sleepwalkers.

Sleepwalkers is technically an adaptation of King’s narrative fiction. However, King’s screenplay is based on an unpublished story, making it sort of like an original entity, but not quite. The pseudo-adaptation is way over the top and didn’t manage to win over many critics upon release. But the picture’s camp appeal has earned the property a small but loyal fanbase with an appreciation for ‘90s cheese.

King’s Concept for Sleepwalkers is nothing if not imaginative

I mean it when I say the film is cheesy. The setup involves an ancient race of energy vampires that shift into were-cats when they feed. However, real cats are the mortal enemies of these supernatural creatures because only they can see the titular characters as they truly are. Oh, yeah, I almost forgot. The central monsters are also telekinetic.

The setup is more than a little preposterous and maybe one that works more effectively on the page than the screen. However, this film is the perfect pick to put on for a bad movie night with friends. If you’re keen to watch Sleepwalkers, head over to Pluto where you can find the film streaming for free (with ads) as of the publication of this post.

Anyone who dares to sit through this divisive effort will be treated to Stephen King, Clive Barker, and Tobe Hooper all appearing in supporting roles. Not to mention, Mick Garris directs, so you have a lot of horror cinema heavyweights involved with this project.

The setup goes like this:

When newcomers Charles (Brian Krause) and his mother, Mary (Alice Krige), settle into town, the local residents do not suspect that they’re shape-shifters looking to feed on the town’s virgin girls. Charles quickly befriends innocent and chaste Tanya (Madchen Amick) when he begins attending high school, hoping to take her life force in order to feed his mother. When Tanya agrees to a first date with Charles, she may learn his true intentions the hard way.
