Terrifying Hidden Gem from Mike Flanagan is Now Free to Stream; Don’t Miss it

Mike Flanagan is a cinematic force with a keen understanding of what goes into crafting a scare. Flanagan is a scrappy visionary whose career doesn’t include any missteps. With a sizable filmography, that’s quite an accomplishment. Seeing as his latest film, The Life of Chuck, just won the prestigious People’s Choice Award at TIFF, the filmmaker is showing no signs of slowing down or stopping. It’s onward and upward from here.

If you’re a Fanagan (see what I did there?), you’ve likely seen the bulk of the director’s more recent cinematic output. But some of his earlier efforts remain relatively under-seen by the moviegoing masses. Absentia is a noteworthy effort from the director that few have seen. And though his chilling tale of a haunted mirror, Oculus, received a theatrical release, it doesn’t have near the name recognition of some of his better-known efforts.

Part of the reason the film lives in the shadow of some of Flanagan’s more-celebrated output may be because it didn’t exactly kill at the box office. The flick grossed a little more than $27 million domestically. That’s certainly a respectable return on a budget of $5 million. But the film still deserves a larger fanbase.

Here’s how you can stream Mike Flanagan’s Oculus for free!

The good news is that if you have yet to experience it, Oculus is now available to stream on Pluto. Hooray!

Fun fact: The film was produced by WWE Studios. The estate to which the mirror at the center of the action is tied is referred to as the Levesque estate. Wrestler Triple H’s real name is Paul Levesque. Clever.

The setup for Oculus goes like this:

Haunted by the violent demise of their parents 10 years earlier, adult siblings Kaylie (Karen Gillan) and Tim (Brenton Thwaites) are now struggling to rebuild their relationship. Kaylie suspects that their antique mirror, known as the Lasser Glass, is behind the tragedy. The seemingly harmless reflections contain a malevolent, supernatural force that infects the mind of anyone who gazes into it. As Kaylie gets closer to the truth, the siblings become caught in the mirror’s evil spell.
