We are back with another movie rec from literary stalwart Stephen King. Today’s pick is a film I couldn’t possibly be more excited to check out when it drops on Shudder, especially after King’s enthusiastic endorsement. I’m talking about The Rule of Jenny Pen. From what I’ve gathered so far, it sounds like a creative setup that will deliver plenty of thrills and perhaps a few chuckles as well. The picture has garnered largely positive responses from critics who have managed to score a sneak peek of the flick.

What did Stephen King say about The Rule of Jenny Pen?

The bestselling author recently screened the film and tweeted: “I watched one of the best movies I’ve seen this year. It’s called The Rule of Jenny Pen, and I urge you to watch it when it appears on Shudder. Geoffrey Rush stars, with John Lithgow as a geriatric psychopath with an evil hand puppet.”

James Ashcroft directed the picture. Ashcroft also penned the screenplay with Eli Kent. The pair adapted the script from a short story by Owen Marshall. Ashcroft previously collaborated with Marshall when he adapted Marshall’s short story Coming Home in the Dark in 2021.

One reason I’m keen to stream The Rule of Jenny Pen when it drops on Shudder is the talented cast. Lithgow and Rush are versatile players skilled in their trade. I can only imagine it will be a delight to see them play against one another. Nathaniel Lees, Thomas Sainsbury, Maaka Pohatu, and Irene Wood round out the film’s supporting cast.

When does The Rule of Jenny Pen debut on Shudder?

While a specific release date has not been announced, MovieWeb reports that the film will bow on Shudder in 2025. With the promise of John Lithgow in control of a malevolent hand puppet, I can’t help but think this one is going to be right up my alley. I loved Lithgow on Dexter. He almost always excels in sinister roles. He is supremely creepy in Blow Out and perfectly unhinged in Cliffhanger.

The story plays out like this: Confined to a secluded rest home and trapped within his stroke-ridden body, a former Judge (Rush) must stop an elderly psychopath (Lithgow) who employs a child’s puppet to abuse the home’s residents with deadly consequences.
