The #1 Most-Watched Thriller on HBO’s Max is Produced by Visionary Guillermo del Toro
Guillermo del Toro is a visionary and an auteur. He’s also a decorated filmmaker with an endless supply of ideas and an unassailable filmography. Each of his directorial credits warrants seeking out and evaluating. But the same can be said of the projects he has produced. A del Toro-produced feature from 2009 recently landed on Max and that’s news worth sharing. More specifically, Splice is now available to stream on the platform.
Guillermo del Toro’s name isn’t the only noteworthy credit attached to the project. Cube director Vincenzo Natali is at the helm of the project and co-wrote the script. Natali shared screenwriting duties with Antoinette Terry Bryant and Doug Taylor.
The picture had an impressive festival run. Splice made its world premiere at the Sitges Film Festival where it won the award for Best Special Effects. The film was also featured as an official selection at Sundance. That’s no small accomplishment.

Splice boasts an impressive casting roster. The film stars Adrien Brody, Sarah Polley, Delphine Chanéac, Brandon McGibbon, Simona Maicanescu, and David Hewlett.
Despite a strong cast, Splice only grossed $27,127,620 worldwide. Against a budget of $30 million, the flick is considered a financial flop.
Although Splice didn’t perform as well as expected, critics still responded positively. The film is ‘certified fresh’ on Rotten Tomatoes with an approval rating of 75%. Our own Steve Barton rated Splice a 4/5 and called it “twisted, perverse, and thought-provoking.”

The setup for Splice goes like this:
Geneticists Clive (Brody) and Elsa (Polley) specialize in creating hybrids of species. When they propose the use of human DNA, their pharmaceutical company bosses forbid it, forcing them to conduct experiments in secret. The result is Dren, a creature with amazing intelligence and physical attributes. At first, Dren exceeds their wildest dreams, but as she begins to grow at an accelerated rate, she threatens to become their worst nightmare.
