Mike Flanagan Praises the Year’s Scariest Movie, Now It’s Streaming for Free!

Oddity

Dim the lights and crank the volume. One of the year’s scariest movies, Damien Mc Carthy’s Oddity, has finally arrived on streaming. While 2024 has been a remarkable year for the horror genre, with some of the century’s best releasing this year (see: Longlegs and The First Omen), Oddity is the most purely terrifying of the bunch. So much so, Damien Mc Carthy’s second feature has even landed on filmmaker Mike Flanagan’s radar. He thinks it’s one of the year’s scariest movies, and he’s right. Learn more about Oddity below:

Per Shudder: Following the savage murder of her twin sister, Darcy seeks vengeance by harnessing the power of haunted artifacts against those accountable.

Oddity had a limited release this past summer. While I’m envious of anyone who had the good fortune of seeing Oddity in theaters, home video isn’t half bad. Especially since, in Oddity’s case, the movie is just too good. So good, in fact, I was regularly gripping the armrests on my couch, overwhelmed with suspense about what was going to happen next.

Oddity is visceral, frightening, a little weird, and a whole lot of terrifying. The movie will no doubt crack most “Best Of” lists as the year comes to a close, including Mike Flanagan’s, who called the film “Absolutely excellent.” The Midnight Mass and Doctor Sleep filmmaker recently shared his thoughts on Oddity via his Letterboxd account. You can check out his profile here, and read his thoughts below:

“Absolutely excellent. Damian Mc Carthy’s engrossing, terrifying follow-up to his atmospheric and chilling CAVEAT is a masterclass in dread, atmosphere, and tension. An arresting opening sequence involving a woman answering the door to an unsettling stranger blossoms into a tale of supernatural revenge, mournful spirits, and buried secrets.”

Mike Flanagan goes on to call the film “One of the best of the year,” concluding by saying, “This one gets under the skin.” I can’t think of a better endorsement than that. Oddity, truly, is the real deal. It’s terrifying, engaging, and wildly successful in its commitment to making audiences jump. When you get the chance, I wholeheartedly recommend settling in for an odd, odd night.

What do you think? If you’ve seen Oddity, do you agree with Mike Flanagan? If not, what was the scariest movie of the year for you? Let me know over on Twitter @Chadiscollins. Solid chance I might not be there, though– I might, just maybe, be watching Oddity again.

Oddity premieres on Shudder Friday, September 27.
