One of the Year’s Best Horror Films Is Now #1 on HBO’s Max Charts: “A movie has never made me feel like this before”

I Saw the TV Glow

Without a doubt, Jane Schoenbrun’s I Saw the TV Glow is my favorite movie of the year. So much so, I even joined two of my peers this past June for a series dedicated to the film and our own Pink Opaque, so to speak. I’ve been buzzing about Schoenbrun’s second feature since Sundance, and really, I’ve been buzzing about Schoenbrun even longer. After all, I called We’re All Going to the World’s Fairthis generation’s The Blair Witch Project.” HBO’s Max has answered our streaming prayers.

If you missed I Saw the TV Glow in May, now is the perfect time to check it out. Not only is the film streaming on Max, it’s also charting at Number One on the streamer. Check out a trailer and synopsis below:

Per Max: Introduced to a mysterious late-night TV show — a vision of a secret, supernatural world — teenage Owen’s reality begins to crack.

Broadly, I Saw the TV Glow is one of the year’s most critically successful releases. There’s some polarization in Schoenbrun’s inimitable approach to gender identity, the noxious lens of nostalgia, and big suburban sadness, but by and large, everyone is intoxicated by the glow of this TV. The movie is tender, heartfelt, deeply (painfully) sad, yet simultaneously fun and hopeful. Plus, I Saw the TV Glow has got a spooky moon. No movie ever has been worse off because of a spooky moon.

In my 5-star review out of this year’s Sundance Film Festival, I couldn’t stop raving about I Saw the TV Glow. At the time, I wrote, “While my lived experience is markedly different than the thrust of the narrative here, I am confident in saying it’s a profound accomplishment of not just trans-storytelling, but storytelling more broadly. It’s an arresting fever dream of angst and terror that throttles the audience with affecting truths, augmented by sensational music (Alex G, a legend) and arresting, analog visuals courtesy of Eric K. Yue.”

I think I might have even been a little modest then. I Saw the TV Glow, truly, is a masterpiece. With the film’s arrival on Max, fans online have been enraptured by its analog bliss. Check out some choice audience reactions below:
