Vampires used to be all the rage. The 1990s and 2000s loved bloodsucking fiends. Sure, there was Twilight fever, but there was also Dracula 2000 (incredible movie), Van Helsing, the Blade movies, and Universal’s first stab at a cinematic universe with Dracula Untold. Then The Waking Dead premiered, and the horror scene shifted radically. But Netflix is one step ahead of us.

Everything seemed to be about the undead, and those reanimated goons held a pretty strong grip over the genre for the better part of a decade. It’s incredible, then, that Netflix’s 2021 release Blood Red Sky not only managed to be a success but additionally secured a spot as the most-watched horror movie on the platform… ever. Yeah, of all time.

Take to the skies of Netflix horror:

Per Netflix: They had a perfect plan: hijack a plane and hold the passengers ransom. But there’s another threat on board… and she’s far more deadly.

Blood Red Sky succeeded where Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan failed with The Strain (remember that). Like a perfect lightning strike, it captured viewers’ attention in an era when vampires had lost their bite. Despite running over two hours long, the German-language film captured over 60 million unique viewers and more than 100 million total hours streamed.

Peter Thorwarth’s sky-high vampire epic was a huge win for the streamer. At the time, Netflix had pivoted more toward its original content, intending to release at least one new title a week. Blood Red Sky was the most successful German original on the platform ever and, as noted, the most successful horror movie. With a pitch as solid as “vampires on a plane,” it’s no wonder why. Seriously, just put different monsters on planes. It almost always works (unless you’re Flight 7500).

It certainly helps that Blood Red Sky was a critical success. Critic reviews were largely positive, with praise directed toward the action, the suspense, and the solid performances at the movie’s core. Still, despite the success, Blood Red Sky doesn’t seem to have the traction some of the decade’s other horror heavyweights do. No doubt because of its streaming release, at least in part, so take this as your sign to check the film out if you’ve missed it.
