Happy October 1, Dread Central Readers. The Spooky Season is (officially) upon us. Hooray for that. On that note: A prequel to a beloved horror classic dominates the Paramount+ charts today. Apartment 7A, a precursor to the celebrated horror classic Rosemary’s Baby, stands as the most-watched film on the platform worldwide.

The collective critical response to the film has been less than enthusiastic. And while that might typically give me pause, I’m inclined to set the negative critiques aside and check this out myself. I’ve read a few reviews and noticed several criticize the film for being predictable based on its status as a prequel. But that seems like an unfair assessment. Few prequels have the benefit of being particularly shocking. We know where the story is going. So, I’m eager to stream this one and draw my conclusions.

Also fueling my curiosity, Dread Central Editor-in-Chief Mary Beth McAndrews spoke favorably of the film in her review. McAndrews critiqued the picture out of Fantastic Fest and gave Apartment 7A a 3.5 out of 5. She sums up the flick by saying: “Featuring stellar central performances from Julia Garner and Dianne Wiest, Apartment 7A stands tall all on its own, making it the perfect film to watch this Halloween season.” She makes sure to spotlight Wiest for her “deliciously diabolical” performance.

Apartment 7A features a stellar cast that includes Julia Garner, Dianne Wiest, Kevin McNally, Jim Sturgess, Marli Siu, and Rosy McEwen.

Natalie Erika James directs the title. James co-wrote the screenplay with Christian White and Skylar James. The project is produced by Paramount Players, Sunday Night Productions, and Platinum Dunes.

The setup for this Paramount+ original film goes like this:

Terry Gionoffrio dreams of fame and fortune in New York City, but after suffering an injury, an older, wealthy couple welcomes her into their home in Bramford. When she receives an offer for another chance at fame, it seems that all her dreams are coming true. However, disturbing circumstances soon have her second-guessing the sacrifices she’s willing to make for her career as she realizes that something evil is living not only in Apartment 7A, but in the Bramford itself.

That’s all we have for you at present, dear reader. Watch for more updates on which films are making waves on the streaming charts shortly. Follow @DreadCentral on Twitter (X) to never miss an update.
