Quentin Tarantino’s signature style is steeped in genre tropes. He cut his teeth on exploitation and horror cinema. Many of his features contain horror elements; however, the Academy Award-winning filmmaker has only cranked out one horror movie during his decades-long career. We are pleased to report that that particular effort, Death Proof, is now available to stream on Prime Video! Three cheers for that exciting news.

But wait, is Death Proof Tarantino’s worst movie?

Tarantino once referred to his only horror picture as his “worst movie.” But that’s kind of a complicated statement. Is it the least noteworthy of his impressive filmography? Perhaps. But Quentin Tarantino has set the bar rather high. Even if it is a ‘lesser’ effort, Death Proof is a thrilling nod to the exploitation output of the ‘70s. And Kurt Russell delivers a badass showing as a maniacal stuntman with an axe to grind.

What’s more, the film boasts a dynamite cast. Aside from Russell, the lineup includes Zoë Bell, Rosario Dawson, Vanessa Ferlito, Sydney Tamiia Poitier, Tracie Thoms, and Rose McGowan.

Death Proof premiered as part of the Grindhouse double feature, a two-film theatrical bill with Tarantino’s Death Proof and Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror. The release strategy yielded less than optimal results, pulling in a paltry monetary return. Some theatergoers didn’t understand that two films were being exhibited and left after the first feature concluded. Additionally, many didn’t get the thematic references to which the directors were paying tribute, which complicated matters further.

Despite a lackluster theatrical run, the films have found an audience on home video. And I’m not surprised. They make for a substantial double bill. If you’re keen to seek out Death Proof, head over to Prime Video and stream it.

Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof plays out like this:

Stuntman Mike (Russell) is a professional body double who likes to take unsuspecting women for deadly drives in his free time. He has doctored his car for maximum impact; when Mike purposely causes wrecks, the bodies pile up while he walks away with barely a scratch. The insane Mike may be in over his head, though, when he targets a tough group of female friends, including real-life stuntwoman Zoe Bell, who plays herself.

That’s all we’ve got for the time being. Stay tuned for more updates on which genre pictures are available to stream and where to find them. Additionally, follow @DreadCentral on the social media platform formerly known as Twitter so you never miss an update.
