The New #1 Watched Horror Series on Hulu Has the Internet Feeling Very Hot and Bothered

Hulu

It can be hard for viewers to keep up with the ever-expanding universe of Ryan Murphy. Last week, the latest in his Monsters series, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, premiered on Netflix. Earlier this year, the second season of Feud arrived on FX. It might even surprise you to hear the latest season of American Horror Story, titled Delicate, only finished its run this year.

Yes, that show is still going. If that wasn’t enough, Ryan Murphy has another new horror series arriving just in time for October. Grotesquerie, which premiered September 25, was the most-streamed horror series on Hulu. Read on to see what the show is all about.

Per Hulu: Detective Lois Tryon feels a series of heinous crimes in her small community are eerily personal, as if someone or something is taunting her. At home, Lois grapples with a strained relationship with her daughter, a husband in long-term hospital care and her own inner demons. With no leads and unsure where to turn, she accepts the help of Sister Megan, a nun and journalist with the Catholic Guardian. As Lois and Sister Megan string together clues, they find themselves ensnared in a sinister web that only seems to raise more questions than answers.

Grotesquerie stars Ryan Murphy regulars Niecy Nash and Courtney B. Vance alongside a cabal of recognizable faces, including The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story’s own Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Lesley Manville, and Travis Kelce, because why not?

The show hasn’t yet captured the same interest Murphy’s American Horror Story series does, though it is off to a solid start despite an unconventional release strategy—two episodes drop per week.

Travis Kelce in Grotesquerie

Presently, the series is poised to run until October 30, knocking its first season out in just over a month. It’s unclear whether Murphy and company intend for Grotesquerie to be a one-off or whether, like most properties Murphy is attached to, it will continue to run, perhaps as an anthology, for years to come.

Critically, the show has been more successful than I’d have guessed. Right now, Grotesquerie is sitting at a 75% on Rotten Tomatoes. Expectedly, Niecy Nash is widely considered the best part of the show. Like Scream Queens and the first season of Monsters (one of Netflix’s most-watched series of all time), Nash immediately commands the screen whenever she appears. Grotesquerie is worth the watch for her alone.

Fans online have been ravenous for Grotesquerie, especially as October rolls around and everyone earnestly shifts into the spookiest mood they can. Also, like most Ryan Murphy shows, everyone is kind of horny?

Whether Grotesquerie can sustain its momentum remains to be seen, but for the moment, the show (and Nicholas Alexander Chavez) have viewers captivated. I want to know what you think, though. Have you had a chance to catch Grotesquerie on Hulu? Are you still willing to give Ryan Murphy a shot, or has more than a decade of American Horror Story worn you out?
