This Underrated Denzel Washington Survival Thriller Is Now Free-To-Stream Online

Denzel Washington in The Taking of Pelham 123

Denzel Washington has taken on so many unforgettable roles in his decades-long career. Even the Oscar-winning actor’s lesser efforts still have a degree of merit in most cases. Speaking of his lesser efforts, one film fitting that bill recently landed on Tubi and we have the lowdown for you. Heck yeah.

That’s right, the 2009 remake of The Taking of Pelham 123 is currently available to stream for free (with ads) thanks to your thoughtful friends at Tubi. But should you stream it? Well, that depends entirely on what it is you’re looking for, dear reader. If you’re on the hunt for a time-waster that gets more right than wrong, you may find this divisive remake fits the bill. If you seek a white-knuckle thrill ride that functions on all cylinders, you may want to look elsewhere.

The action in The Taking of Pelham 123 unfolds like this:

Chaos reigns in the New York City subway system when heavily armed criminals, led by a mastermind named Ryder (John Travolta), hijack a subway train and threaten to kill everyone on board unless a large ransom is paid. Dispatcher Walter Garber (Washington) uses his extensive knowledge of the transit system in a bid to outwit the hijackers and save the hostages, but one question remains: even if the hijackers get their money, how can they possibly escape?

What did critics say about this divisive Denzel Washington film?

Critics rightfully said that this reimagining pales in comparison to the original, and it absolutely does. But many film scholars took care to praise Washington’s thoughtful performance within Tony Scott’s oft-maligned reimagining of the 1974 original.

Fun fact: The 2009 remake of The Taking of Pelham 123 shot the majority of the subway scenes on location in New York. And they did so on live tracks! That element surely adds an air of authenticity to the proceedings and likely saved the production a bundle on recreating the look and feel of the NYC subway system on a sound stage. I can only imagine that would be costly and labor-intensive.
