An Epic Survival Thriller Mike Flanagan Ranks as an All-Time Favorite is Now Streaming for Free!

Mike Flanagan

Mike Flanagan is a master of modern horror. He is an undisputed expert at building and sustaining atmospheric tension. If you doubt that claim, on any level, I implore you to stop what you’re doing and immediately watch Hush.

When a creator with Flanagan’s skill set flags a film as particularly effective, we always stand up and take note. I was recently perusing Mr. Flanagan’s Letterboxd profile and happened upon a list of the director’s top 100 films of all time. Not surprisingly, there are a number of spectacular picks on his list. But the one that caught my eye is The Grey. A Liam Neeson survival chiller featuring a snowbound setting and a gaggle of hungry wolves. Yes, please.

Where is The Grey streaming?

If you are keen to see why Flanagan holds the film in such high regard, you can find The Grey streaming for free (with ads) on Amazon Freevee as of the publication of this post.

The Grey is an intense effort with a killer cast. In addition to Neeson, the picture also features Dermot Mulroney (Insidious: Chapter 3), Frank Grillo (The Purge franchise), Dallas Roberts (The Walking Dead), and Joe Anderson (The Crazies 2010). Smokin’ Aces director Joe Carnahan sat at the helm of this riveting effort.

The picture is adapted from the short story “Ghost Walker” by Ian MacKenzie Jeffers. Jeffers co-wrote the screenplay with Carnahan.

Interestingly enough, Liam Neeson’s A-Team co-star Bradley Cooper was initially set to topline the picture. But Neeson ultimately tackled the role and it’s hard to imagine the film without him.

The setup for this Mike Flanagan-approved chiller goes as follows:

In Alaska, a team of oil workers board a flight home; however, they cross a storm, and the airplane crashes. Only seven workers survive in the wilderness and John Ottway, a huntsman who kills wolves to protect the workers, assumes leadership of the group. Shortly after they learn that they are surrounded by a pack of wolves and Ottway advises that they should seek protection in the woods. But while they walk through the heavy snow, they are chased and attacked by the carnivorous mammals.
