The Scariest Horror Movie of the Year is Now Streaming; Mike Flanagan calls it “The real deal”
October is in full swing, so you’re no doubt in the throes of putting together the perfect Halloween watch list. No doubt, classics like Trick ‘r Treat and Halloween will make the cut, but you’d be remiss to skip out on one of the scariest, if not the scariest, movie of the year. Damien Mc Carthy’s Oddity, a full-throttle nightmare-inducing masterpiece, is now streaming free. Critics have called it “Really damn scary,” and horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan even called it “one of the best of the year.” Learn more below:
Per Shudder: When Dani is brutally murdered at the remote country house that she and her husband Ted are renovating, everyone suspects a patient from the local mental health institution, where Ted is a doctor. However, soon after the tragic killing, the suspect is found dead. A year later, Dani’s blind twin sister Darcy, a self-proclaimed psychic and collector of cursed items, pays an unexpected visit to Ted and his new girlfriend, Yana. Convinced that there was more to her sister’s murder than people know, Darcy has brought with her the most dangerous items from her cursed collection to help her exact revenge.
In our four-star review of Oddity out of this year’s SXSW Festival, we wrote, “I’m willing to bet that Oddity is one of the scariest movies of the year. McCarthy took what he accomplished with Caveat and turned it up to eleven to deliver a good old-fashioned ghost story designed to keep you up at night.” Oddity is a favorite among the Dread Central team. No doubt, we’ll all have it somewhere on our year-end lists as 2024 comes to a close. Oddity is that damn scary.
Midnight Mass and Doctor Sleep filmmaker Mike Flanagan even agrees. He has championed Damien Mc Carthy’s sophomore feature online, writing, “Mc Carthy is the real deal. This one gets under the skin.” Caveat is terrifying enough, but Oddity takes it to another level entirely. While hardened horror fans might find some familiarity in the way Oddity’s haunting unfolds, Mc Carthy’s assured direction and a trio of fantastic performances ensure you’ll be leaving the lights on for the entire night anyway.
Like Mike Flanagan, fans can’t get enough. Many agree Oddity is possibly the year’s scariest movie, calling it “haunting” and “scary-as-hell.” Do you agree? Is Oddity the scariest movie of the year? What other movies are in the running? As I finalize my own October watch list, let me know over on Twitter @Chadiscollins.
